چکیده

Concerns about the management of threatened species continue to grow as these populations face mounting pressures from many factors. Trophy hunting in particular plays a significant role in wildlife conservation, both economically and biologically. In this paper, we present a framework for analyzing the economic impacts of different management strategies in the context of legal lion hunting in Tanzania. We develop an economic model from the perspective of a profit-maximizing trophy hunting company managing a hunting block with lion hunting opportunities. Existing literature has not addressed either the economic ramifications of alternative practices or the influence of existing policies on the behavior of hunting companies. The analysis in this paper aims to understand if conservation is aligned with profit-maximizing objectives given the current economic and policy climate. Specifically, we investigate the conditions under which hunting companies can earn higher returns by exploiting the client’s willingness to pay for older, more mature males. The findings indicate that selective hunting can indeed generate larger profits by maintaining stable lion populations. We also find that existing government regulations could potentially reduce the efficacy of selective hunting practices. JEL codes: Q27, Q38, Q56, Q57

The Significance of African Lions for the Financial Viability of Trophy Hunting and the Maintenance of Wild Land

Recent studies indicate that trophy hunting is impacting negatively on some lion populations, notably in Tanzania. In 2004 there was a proposal to list lions on CITES Appendix I and in 2011 animal-welfare groups petitioned the United States government to list lions as endangered under their Endangered Species Act. Such listings would likely curtail the trophy hunting of lions by limiting the im...

The Trophy Hunting of African Lions: Scale, Current Management Practices and Factors Undermining Sustainability

The trophy hunting of lions Panthera leo is contentious due to uncertainty concerning conservation impacts and because of highly polarised opinions about the practice. African lions are hunted across at least ~558,000 km(2), which comprises 27-32% of the lion range in countries where trophy hunting of the species is permitted. Consequently, trophy hunting has potential to impart significant pos...

Sustainability and Long Term-Tenure: Lion Trophy Hunting in Tanzania

It is argued that trophy hunting of large, charismatic mammal species can have considerable conservation benefits but only if undertaken sustainably. Social-ecological theory suggests such sustainability only results from developing governance systems that balance financial and biological requirements. Here we use lion (Panthera leo) trophy hunting data from Tanzania to investigate how resource...

Insights into the Management of Large Carnivores for Profitable Wildlife-Based Land Uses in African Savannas

Large African predators, especially lions (Panthera leo) and leopards (Panthera pardus), are financially valuable for ecotourism and trophy hunting operations on land also utilized for the production of other wildlife species for the same purpose. Predation of ungulates used for trophy hunting can create conflict with landholders and trade off thus exists between the value of lions and leopards...

Modeling the effects of trophy selection and environmental disturbance on a simulated population of African lions.

Tanzania is a premier destination for trophy hunting of African lions (Panthera leo) and is home to the most extensive long-term study of unhunted lions. Thus, it provides a unique opportunity to apply data from a long-term field study to a conservation dilemma: How can a trophy-hunted species whose reproductive success is closely tied to social stability be harvested sustainably? We used an in...
